The "Mägdebrunnen" (Maidens' Fountain) was recreated in 2003 on the site of a historical fountain by the German sculptor Günter Kaden. Its design details have repeatedly inspired various interpretations. Here, where Schillstraße flows into Fährstraße in the direction of the harbor, a fountain "am Schilde" stood for centuries to supply the surrounding population with water. It was the task of the maidens to fetch the water from the fountain and carry it to the households of the patrician houses. Sculptor Günter Kaden took up this theme as part of an urban planning competition, won it, and in 2003 designed the fountain from a granite block with a group of bronze figures. Very delicious food and superb service! The restaurant was busting with customers on a Saturday late afternoon until late into the night. They served us ouzo as we ordered our drinks but this was way too strong for me. I got an espresso at the end instead. They also informed us as we ordered that they only accepted cash. That was helpful as we hardly carry enough cash with us. There is a carpark next to the restaurant so getting there is quite convenient.
