June 4, 2025, Aubourn Hall

Aubourn Hall itself is a rare 17th century manor house and something of an ‘architectural riddle’ set in 12 acres of secluded gardens, in the heart of the village of Aubourn. Surrounded by the wider Aubourn Estate which is made up of approximately 2,500 acres of farmland and woodland. The estate had 500 years of continuous ownership by the Nevile family.

Half buried in the hedgerow are the remains of a Second World War air raid shelter. It is a shelter of the Stanton precast concrete segment type. The steel reinforced concrete sections were bolted together, making a shelter of any length. The type was favoured by the Air Ministry. Why is it there in a hedgerow miles from an airfield?

Dont follow google navigation, goes to wrong spot. Tucked away on private land so take some finding. Temple Bruer with Temple High Grange is a civil parish and a former extra-parochial area in North Kesteven, Lincolnshire, which had in the Medieval period been held by the Knights Templar and later by the Knights Hospitaller of Temple Bruer Preceptory.
