The Water Gate of Pull's Ferry, now a private house, was once the home of the ferryman John Pull, after whom it is named. The arched water gate dates from the Middle Ages, but the adjoining house is of more recent origin. It was also known as Sandland's Ferry, named after a previous ferryman. Although Norwich had more bridges over the River Wensum than any other town in England around 1300, Bishop Bridge was the only fixed river crossing on the east side of the city. This remained the case until Carrow Bridge and Foundry Bridge were built in the early 19th century. Ferries allowed people to cross the river and avoid long detours. Some even operated after new bridges were built. A passenger ferry ran from Pull's Ferry until the 1930s. Many passengers were spectators on their way to 'The Nest' stadium on Rosary Road, the then home ground of Norwich City Football Club.
