Thus, today we see a structure that was made possible in the spirit of the congregation of Jesus Christ. The habitus is a uniform, large hall building, on the ground plan of an almost square nave. The choir and apse nestle against the preserved rock walls. Romanesque masonry and Gothic architectural style merged. The church's design comes from the master builder Johann Georg Schott from Heide, born and raised in Southern Germany (Vaihingen an der Enz). With his background, he may be responsible for the form of the steeple, the "onion", which is impressive for Northern Germany. Wesselburen was built on two mounds in marshland, which were inhabited over 1000 years ago, and grew into a larger settlement over time. According to archaeological findings, the central village mound dates from the 8th to 9th century and was continuously raised. On May 7, 1281, the place was first mentioned in a document, as Hamburg and Dithmarschen concluded a non-aggression pact in Mehldorf. Even then, the place had the structure it has today: Starting from the highest point, where the church is located, the main streets radiate outwards from the historic town center.
