The church in Rettenbach is one of the few churches in the district that has retained its Romanesque character in its exterior. The church's exterior walls are adorned with a round-arch frieze with 14 arches, as is the tower with seven arches. The building is a Romanesque choir tower dating from before 1300; in the 15th century, the church was remodeled in the Gothic style.

The patronage of St. Leonard has been known since 1524. But St. Anne was the second patron saint, as the Schmidt register of 1738 even mentions a church dedicated to St. Anne. St. Anne was also the patron saint of the castle chapel, which was demolished in 1843. Many of the castle's lords from the Barth family (the coat of arms features a bearded face) are buried in the church. Today's branch church of St. Leonard and Anne of the Vierkirchen parish is a Gothic building that was rebuilt or expanded during the Baroque period, and above all, refurbished. Sculpture by Indersdorf artist Karin Gottschalk. "Why some older Indersdorf residents call the area near the fountain at the Lower Market "Sauzipfe" (pig's tail) – apparently no one knows for sure. Nevertheless, they wanted to incorporate this image into the redesign of the market square, and so the market town, together with the Indersdorf Beautification Association, decided that a swineherd with two pigs would be a nice idea."
