Unfortunately the artwork has been all but lost now - only a very faint remnant remains to be seen.

If your luck you might bump into this fabulous warden, we walked with him for about 25min he was incredibly knowledgeable about everything to do with the wildlife that visit the reserve. We were so glad we met him and learned a lot about the reserve and some of the birds that visit.

Invigorating coastal trails
The Norfolk Coast AONB boasts many of the best hiking trails in North Norfolk. Stretching from the iconic striped cliffs of Hunstanton in the west to Horsey in the east, its sweeping beaches, tidal creeks and saltmarshes are backed by a hinterland of rolling countryside, thriving market towns and archetypal windmills.
In the west, Holkham Hall’s majestic 25,000 acre (10,000 ha) agricultural estate offers verdant parkland and roaming deer. Nearby is one of Britain’s finest beaches at Well-next-the-Sea, a haven for birdlife. Nature reserves abound and there are a multitude of trails allowing plenty of scope for creative route planning. Further east you can explore Beacon Hill, East Anglia’s highest at 338 feet (103 m), which offers a wonderful panorama of the lighthouses, villages and beaches that line the coast.
Seal the deal on wildlife hikes
Discover sublime wildlife on your hikes around North Norfolk. November to the end of January is the time to marvel at the grey seals who come ashore to breed. Whilst gazing at these beautiful creatures and their pups is an exhilarating experience, show respect by not going within thirty feet (10 m) and keep your dog on a lead at all times.
The region is an ornithologist’s dream. The sight of flocking birds reflected in the glistening sea is commonplace and the salt marshes and mudflats provide food for thousands upon thousands of winter migrators. Meanwhile, close encounters with hen harriers and oystercatchers are common on the trails that explore the Broads in the southeast. Whatever the time of year, there’s always something to see in the skies.
Startling discoveries on the Deep History Coast
The stretch of coastline between Weybourne and Cart Gap is known as the Deep History Coast. During your walks around North Norfolk your hiking boots will follow in the footsteps of some of our most ancient ancestors. Incredibly, 850,000-year-old human footprints were discovered here, the earliest evidence of our species outside of Africa’s Rift Valley. As if that wasn’t enough, the skeleton of the most well-preserved mammoth ever found was also nearby.Yes, North Norfolk has many excellent circular routes. For a classic coastal experience, the Cromer & Overstrand loop is a 4.5-mile (7.3 km) walk that combines cliff-top paths with seaside strolling. If you prefer parkland and woodland, the Sheringham Park & Weybourne loop offers a 7-mile (11.2 km) trail with varied scenery.
The region is great for family outings. A fantastic short walk is the Wells-next-the-Sea and Wells-next-the-Sea Beach trail. It's a flat, 2.6-mile (4.2 km) route, perfect for little legs, taking you past the town's famous colourful beach huts.
North Norfolk is very dog-friendly, but there are some important considerations. Many beaches and nature reserves have restrictions, especially during bird nesting season (spring and summer) and seal pupping season (winter). Always check local signage. Trails within Holkham Estate and many sections of the coastal path are great for dogs, but keep them on a lead where livestock is present or as signs direct.
The salt marshes are a haven for wildlife. The Cley Marshes loop is an easy 3.9-mile (6.3 km) walk through one of the UK's most famous birdwatching sites. For a chance to see seals, especially in autumn and winter, the Horsey Mere loop to Horsey beach is an excellent 5-mile (8.1 km) choice.
The main long-distance route is the Norfolk Coast Path National Trail, which runs for 42 miles from Hunstanton to Cromer. It can be combined with the Peddars Way, a historic Roman road, for a longer trek. You can tackle these trails in sections, such as the moderate 7.5-mile (12 km) Cley-next-the-Sea & Blakeney loop, which uses part of the coastal path.
The Coasthopper bus service is an excellent option for accessing trails along the coast. It runs frequently between King's Lynn and Cromer, stopping at many popular walking start points like Wells-next-the-Sea, Blakeney, and Sheringham. This allows you to walk a linear section of the path and catch the bus back.
To escape the busiest coastal spots, head slightly inland. The River Ant loop from Ludham offers a peaceful 6.4-mile (10.2 km) walk through the Broads, following quiet riverside paths and country lanes away from the main tourist hubs.
The weather can change quickly, especially on the coast. Layering is key. Always bring a waterproof and windproof jacket, even on a sunny day. Sturdy walking shoes or boots are recommended as paths can be uneven, sandy, or muddy. In summer, a hat and sun protection are essential.
The region is highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.6 stars. Hikers frequently praise the stunning, wide-open coastal views, the well-maintained paths through unique salt marsh habitats, and the abundance of wildlife, particularly the birdlife and seal colonies.
Many walks in North Norfolk pass through charming villages with traditional pubs. The Horsey Mere and Dunes walk is a 5.6-mile (9 km) route that starts and ends near the village of Horsey, which has a pub perfect for a post-hike refreshment.
Several areas are local favorites for hiking. The Holkham National Nature Reserve is highly regarded for its mix of pinewoods, dunes, and vast sandy beach. For a different experience, Holt Country Park offers well-marked woodland trails. The National Trust - Blakeney National Nature Reserve is another top-rated spot, famous for its coastal paths and wildlife.
