Haigh Hall is a historic country house in Haigh, Wigan, Greater Manchester. Built between 1827 and 1840 for James Lindsay, 7th Earl of Balcarres, it replaced an ancient manor house and was a Lindsay family home until 1947, when it was sold to Wigan Corporation. The hall is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building and is owned by Wigan Council. It has a great cycling path around the hall and around the grounds.

A historic town with a rich industrial heritage
Formerly part of the historic county of Lancashire but today occupying the western end of Greater Manchester, Wigan has a long and distinguished history. Once the Roman settlement of Coccium, it was the Industrial Revolution that saw its population expand rapidly. The town and others in the region became important mill and coal mining centres, the legacy of which forms an integral part of many walks around Wigan today.
Only a short walk from the bustling town centre is the recently restored Mesnes Park, a Grade II-listed Victorian greenspace that covers 30 acres (12 ha). During the 1800s, two collieries operated here, before the area was purchased for its current use in 1871.

Wiganโs Greenheart occupies a vast area, much of which was once given over for industrial purposes. Its marvellous regenerated greenspaces are a delight to explore, such as Amberswoodโs 395 acres (160 ha) of lakes, woodlands and wetlands or the developing Bickershaw Country Park, a huge 610-acre (247 ha) wildlife haven.
Some of the best hiking routes around Wigan are found around Greenheartโs flashes, many of which can be accessed along the Leeds and Liverpool Canalโs Leigh Branch. Flash is a northern English word for a body of water that forms where the land below has subsided, usually due to mining.ย
These shallow wetlands have been reclaimed by nature and their surroundings have been given a helping hand by local enthusiasts. Places like the Wigan Flashes Local Nature Reserve and Pennington Flash Country Park are today incredibly vibrant places for a stroll with loads of wildlife to discover among their myriad habitats, including the protected water vole.
