Superb rolling woodland, in a sunken valley with a river running through it and that big leaning rock (bique)

The old boat lifts of the Canal du Centre are impressive metal structures that transport ships to the uppermost section of the canal in four lifts. While one of the lifts is raised hydraulically, the other descends to the lower section of the canal. Built between 1882 and 1917, they are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Since 2002, cargo ships have been passing through the new Strépy-Thieu lift.

When I was still "able-bodied", I climbed it several times... The climb is also well laid out as a staircase with railway "balls"... Once at the top, you can enjoy a splendid view of Mons (in particular of Sainte Waudru) as well as of Hyon and in particular, its church with its greenish bell tower.

Lift No.4 on the old Canal du Centre at Le Roeulx is a beautifully preserved boat lift from the early 20th century, and a masterpiece of industrial architecture. Made from steel and sheet metal, this historic lift lifts boats between different water levels and remains an impressive sight in the landscape. A visit to this unique UNESCO World Heritage site offers a fascinating insight into the engineering feats of yesteryear and the rich history of Hainaut’s waterways.
