The lock and weir complex also includes a fish passage in the form of a basin staircase. This is a construction that ensures that the fish can swim past the weir without any problems. (https://www.vlaamsewaterweg.be)

The oldest part of the church, the choir, dates from 1539. It is the only thing left of the old church (whose history dates back to the thirteenth century) after a Calvinist iconoclasm in 1572. The church has undergone several extensions over the centuries - the last in 1896 - and other renovations. The church was built at the intersection of a road coming from Brabant, a road that connected Aalst and Dendermonde and a ford through the Dender, close to the then castle: “Hof Ter Belle”. The village square had a market or trading function. Over time, the mudflats and springs have lost their economic importance. Source: mariaparochie.be/kerken/denderbelle-st-martinuskerk

The holding basin at Fochelstraat consists of two parts, east and west of Fochelstraat, and was dug along the Vondelbeek. This watercourse, which is also called the Brabantse Beek, flows from Opwijk first along the eastern holding basin and then meanders under the Fochelstraat and thus crosses the western part. These holding basins are also a beautiful piece of nature in our municipality. A willow arboretum was created in the eastern holding basin in collaboration with Natuurpunt. (Municipality of Lebbeke)
