This is a memorial for Werner de Merode who died in Everberg in 1840. He died at the place where the stone stands in the arms of his son Louis de Merode. On the monument for Count Werner Jean-Baptiste Ghislain de Merode, as he was called in full, it says "A small souvenir of Jean-Baptiste-Werner-Ghislain Count de Mérode, struck here on the 2nd of August in the arms of his sons, Count Louis de Mérode. Our first step is to exemplify the last words of the devil". Werner was the brother of Félix de Merode and was also against the United Kingdom of the Netherlands. He was also a member of the Belgian National Congress and mayor of Everberg for a while. He died before going hunting with his son after having felt unwell during the monthly procession around the Everberg church (after mass), as regional historian par excellence Henri Vannoppen wrote.
