August 16, 2026, Cycle Path Along the Lieve Canal

De Lieve is a historic inland waterway that was dug between 1251 and 1269 to connect Ghent with Damme (originally Aardenburg). In the 13th and 14th centuries, the canal experienced its golden age. Even when the Zwin began to silt up in the 14th and 15th centuries, and later new waterways were constructed — such as the Sasse Vaart in the 16th century and the Ghent-Bruges Canal in 1613-1614 — De Lieve retained its original function until the beginning of the 18th century. Today, parts of De Lieve are still visible. In Ghent, Evergem, and Lievegem, the canal still exists in some places as an open watercourse. In the municipality of Damme, the route is mainly recognizable as a wide strip in the landscape.

A fun contraption to reach the other side without getting your feet wet. This free ferry across the Leopold Canal is undoubtedly one of the most enjoyable ways to continue your tour. With a sturdy chain, you pull yourself manually from one bank to the other. A bit of work for the crossing, but mostly a fun and playful break from your hike! The ferry is part of the Meetjeslandse Kreken Walking Network and is also very practical. Without this crossing, you would have to make a considerable detour to get to the other side of the wide canal. The water itself also has a special story. The Leopold Canal was dug between 1843 and 1846 to drain the water from the region without having to go through Dutch territory. During World War II, the canal also played an important role in the Battle of the Scheldt. Fortunately, little of that is noticeable today. Reed beds, water birds, and rippling water make the canal a wonderful place to enjoy for a while.
