This is stop 5 of the Reynaert Cycle Route in the municipality of Sint-Laureins, an attractive cycling route revolving around the medieval animal epic "Van Den Vos Reynaerde." The route follows polder roads and creeks, taking you past ten Reynaert statues by Chris Ferket. These depict the chickens Pinte and Sproete (daughters of Cantecleer the rooster), who in the story carried the litter on which their sister, murdered by Reynaert, lay.

The picturesque St. John the Baptist Church is a single-nave church built in 1682 and thoroughly restored in 1984. Above the portal is a niche with a sandstone statue of St. John the Baptist from 1646. The building has a beautiful Rococo and late Baroque interior. The church furnishings include a magnificent confessional (1699), pulpit (1699), and communion rail (1704) by Hendrik Hagheman, a native of Bruges. The church also includes a magnificent monstrance (1725) and a silver reliquary of St. John the Baptist (1775-1776), both made by Pieter De Thieu. St. John in Eremo was once one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in the Meetjesland region. The still-existing procession involved prayers against epilepsy, seizures, fevers, and plagues. Vrouwkenshoekkreek is a creek in the Meetjesland creek area, north of the East Flemish town of Sint-Laureins. The creek is part of a larger creek system that also includes Blokkreek. Although it was a valuable creek, it was filled in the 1950s with sediment from the dredging of the nearby Leopold Canal. This resulted in the disappearance of the unique habitat, leaving only grassland where the creek once lay. In the 1990s, the site was purchased by Natuurpunt, and restoration work began in 2009, including the reestablishment of the connection with Blokkreek, located on Dutch territory (south of Sint Kruis), which had also undergone restoration. The restoration work was completed in 2012. In addition to its function as a nature reserve, the system can also be used for water storage. (Wikipedia)
