The construction of the Chapelle Saint-Gilles in 1733 took place in a particular context. At that time, the region was plagued by the actions of the "Bande noire" (Black Band), a gang of brigands that terrorized the population for fifteen years. Two of the leaders of this band resided in Richelette. Arrested in 1732, they were condemned to the breaking wheel. The chapel was erected as a sign of relief and gratitude for the end of this dark period.
