The Christiaen brewery-malthouse originally dates from the 1790s. The Christiaen industrial complex got its current appearance around 1878. The malt tower and the slender chimney dominate the view of this brewery. Beer was brewed until 1968. The brewery was one of the largest employers in Koekelare.

This former brewery was once a beer paradise, but was transformed from an industrial building into cultural heritage with respect for the past: the former malt loft is now the Käthe Kollwitz Museum. The brewery's outbuildings (horse stables, hop cellar & storage space) are now home to the Fransmansmuseum and the distillery has been converted into the Yves Rhayé room, a tribute to the sculptor and painter. You will also find several works of art there, including those by Willem Vermandere.

Koekelare had a training camp for the Germans during WWI. This was located both in the forest and in the adjacent fields. The tracks in the fields have disappeared, but the training trenches can still be seen in the forest. It became clear after an archaeological investigation that these were training trenches.

During my short stay in Koekelare I discovered it as a warm and cozy village with friendly people and attractive squares. The eye-catcher is the Christiaen brewery-malthouse dating from the 1790s. It is now a cultural center and you will find the Fransmansmuseum, a tribute to Flemish seasonal workers.

The most exotic electricity cabin in Flanders is located on Fransmansplein in Koekelare. During the renovation of the village center in the 1980s, the electricity cabin was remarkably renovated: it was given the design of a Thai temple. The love for Thailand came from the then alderman for Tourism and later mayor Walther Holvoet. He visited the country several times a year and maintained close ties with several Thai prominent figures. During the village center renovation, he engaged a Thai architecture student from Leuven to design a temple. The structure was baptized the 'Sala Thai'. With the exception of the roof tiles, the temple consists entirely of building materials brought over from Thailand. In 1989, the Sala Thai was inaugurated in the presence of the ambassador of Thailand, three Buddhist monks and the pastor of Koekelare.
