The Schlögener Schlinge (often mistakenly called "Schögener Schlinge") is one of Austria's most famous natural wonders. It is a spectacular double bend of the Danube in Upper Austria, approximately halfway between Passau and Linz. The Danube has carved its way through the hard granite rock of the Bohemian Massif here in an almost 180° turn. This is called an "epigenetic breakthrough valley". The Danube originally flowed in soft layers, but over millions of years, it dug deeper and deeper into the underlying hard primeval rock as the land rose. The river changes direction twice in a confined space, which looks like a perfect loop from a bird's-eye view.

On this section of the Danube Cycle Path, striking rock formations dominate the landscape, rising steeply next to the water and creating a particularly impressive overhang. Here, you can clearly see how the Danube has shaped the hard rock over the millennia. Opposite lies Grafenau, which, together with the steep slopes and the expansive view over the river, creates a particularly charming scenery.
