Stenio Melani
July 4, 2026, Naviglio di Bereguardo

The Naviglio di Bereguardo is a historic Lombard artificial canal, 18.85 kilometers long, which starts at Castelletto di Abbiategrasso (branching off from the Naviglio Grande) and ends in the municipality of Bereguardo, on the outskirts of Pavia. Built mainly in the 15th century at the behest of the Dukes of Milan (Filippo Maria Visconti and Francesco I Sforza), it was created as a strategic commercial waterway to transport goods such as salt, wine from Oltrepò, and timber from the Ticino and Po rivers to Milan. It lost its commercial function in the 19th century with the opening of the more modern Naviglio Pavese, transforming today into a fundamental irrigation canal and a renowned destination for outdoor cycle tourism.

The Naviglio di Bereguardo boasts a historic complex of 12 navigation locks (or sluices) IL NAVIGLIO DI BERE GUARDO - Il Motografo, designed to overcome a height difference of 24 m over a distance of just 19 km Naviglio di Bereguardo - Wikipedia. Inaugurated starting from 1438, these Navigli locks allowed boats to go up the Ticino and reach Milan, making the canal the famous "salt road" Il Naviglio di Bereguardo. Today the locks are no longer active for navigation Il Naviglio di Bereguardo and mainly serve as an irrigation canal. You can admire the best-preserved masonry remains and the original bottom gates near Cascina Conca (between Morimondo and Motta Visconti).

The Church of San Siro is the main place of worship in the municipality of the same name in the province of Pavia, belonging to the Diocese of Vigevano. Built between 1729 and 1732 on the remains of a 13th-century chapel, it features an elegant Greek cross plan in the late Baroque style, enriched by 18th-century canvases by the painter Carlo Antonio Bianchi from Pavia.

The reference is to the Naviglio Grande Cycle-Pedestrian Bridge (also known as the Lorenteggio-Ronchetto bridge or M4 San Cristoforo bridge). The structure spans the Naviglio Grande and the railway in a single jump, directly connecting the Lorenteggio/Giambellino district (from Piazza Tirana) with the Ronchetto sul Naviglio district (Via Lodovico il Moro), while also ensuring access to the M4 San Cristoforo metro station.

Trezzano sul Naviglio is an Italian municipality of about 21,000 inhabitants located in the metropolitan city of Milan, in Lombardy. The Via Molinetto cycle-pedestrian underpass from Lorenteggio (on the border between Milan and Corsico) directly connects the Alzaia Naviglio Grande with Via Gonin. Although completed, the official access presents critical issues. It is part of an evolving area for connections between the capital and the hinterland municipalities.

La Conca del Dazio is the first lock on the Naviglio di Bereguardo, located about 5 km south of Castelletto di Abbiategrasso. It takes its name from the toll that merchant boats had to pay at this point before entering the Naviglio Grande towards Milan.

The Naviglio Grande in Abbiategrasso is a crucial hydraulic and historical hub: here the canal makes an elbow bend, turning east towards Milan, and crosses history with the Castelletto di Abbiategrasso and the Naviglio di Bereguardo. It is an ideal area for cycle tourism, with flat routes connecting the nature of the Ticino to the city.
