The Milan-Cremona-Po Canal is an ambitious, partially built and never completed waterway, created to connect Milan to the Po River and thus to the Adriatic Sea. History and Current Status The Project: The idea dates back to the fascist era, with the establishment of the consortium in 1941, to give Milan a commercial outlet to the sea. The construction of a large port was planned in Milan in the southeastern area, the area that is still called Porto di Mare today. Unfinished Construction: Of the approximately 60 kilometers planned, only an initial 13-kilometer stretch connecting Cremona to Pizzighettone has been completed. Closure: The consortium was dissolved on December 31, 2000, and the areas designated for further excavation have largely returned to the Municipality of Milan, effectively archiving the project as an unfinished work. Today's Use: The short active stretch allows commercial cargo ships to navigate and hosts the public port of Cremona.
