Colli Euganei Ring Cycle Route

Highlight • Cycleway

This truly is the ultimate Sunday ride! The ring surrounds the picturesque Euganean Hills and touches several tourist gems such as Monselice, Este, Abano and Montegrotto Terme, and Battaglia. The best thing? It is a route truly suitable for everyone, thanks to its almost negligible difference in altitude. So whether you're an experienced cyclist or just want to enjoy a peaceful bike ride, this itinerary is perfect. Furthermore, the breathtaking views and relaxing atmosphere of the Euganean Hills make this cycling experience even more special.

I recommend having a map to try to recognize and locate the hills along the route. It is an activity that I love as it allows you to have a more engaging experience even for subsequent trips to this wonderful park.

Villa Veneta in Vo Vecchio

Highlight • Historical Site

The seventeenth-century Villa Contarini-Venier in Vo 'Vecchio, which served as the summer home of the Elizabethan nuns, was identified in December 1943 as a place of concentration of the Jews of the provinces of Padua and Rovigo. [1] The four floors of the villa guaranteed ample space for the inmates to lodge, with peaks that even reached 60-70 units. The direction of the camp was entrusted to Italian police personnel; the nuns took care of the management of the kitchen.

The camp was dismantled on July 17, 1944. That day a German unit took the 47 Jews then present in the camp and took them first to Padua: the men in the Piazza Castello prison, the women in the Paolotti prison in Via Belzoni. On 19 July the prisoners were deported to the rice mill of San Sabba and from there sent on 31 July to Auschwitz where they arrived on 3 August. Only three women survived the extermination: Bruna Namais, Ester Hammer Sabbadini and daughter Sylvia Sabbadini.

A detailed written account of the events in the camp, from its establishment to its dismantling, was drawn up by the then parish priest, Don Giuseppe Raisa, and is kept in the parish archive of Vo 'Vecchio.

The town of Momtagnana with its impressive city walls. When we visited, there was a classic horse market outside the city walls and a beautiful village market inside the walls.

In reality, nothing remains of the castle, but the notable medieval walls that surrounded it remain: destroyed and rebuilt several times over the centuries, they are 1 km long; on the top of the hill, the keep which is still present watched over the entire town. Today the city walls enclose the very well-kept and spectacular Italian gardens, inaugurated in 1915, with orderly avenues and geometric flowerbeds, with tree species and centuries-old plants. The park, ideal for walking and relaxing, is open to the public free of charge: it closes in the evening/night, with times that vary depending on the season (see link). https://www.estedavivere.it/it/poi/castello-di-este/ https://www.euganeamente.it/il-castello-carrarese-di-este/
