August 17, 2026, Laubengasse (Glurns Arcades)

Laubengasse in Glurns was created from 1290/1294 by Duke Meinhard II of Tyrol as a fortified marketplace. It served as an important transshipment point for salt, wine, and grain. After its destruction in 1499, the historic trading town was rebuilt under Emperor Maximilian I with its characteristic arcades and city walls.

The church on Tartscer Bühel is considered the landmark of the Vinschgau region. The legendary "Bichl" was already settled in the early Stone Age. The Romanesque Church of St. Vitus was built in the 11th century on a pre-Christian cult site and is one of the oldest preserved buildings in the valley. The art historical highlight are the Romanesque frescoes in the apse from around 1200. The surrounding defensive wall was also likely built around 1200, as indicated by the "opus spicatum" masonry in the northern part of the wall, perhaps an "apotropaic" motif!?

The completely preserved circular wall encloses the alleys, arcades, and squares of South Tyrol's smallest town, which was granted market rights by Meinhard II in 1291. Due to its favorable location on the Adige River and the Via Claudia Augusta trade route, the hamlet was already an important trading center in Roman times.
