Castle Neroche is a significant historical site in Somerset, England, located on the northern escarpment of the Blackdown Hills. It is not a standing stone castle today, but rather a complex of impressive earthworks that reveal a long history of use.

Very rocky hard packed trail up to the summit. If you don’t have suspension you will definitely feel it through the bike into your body! I’m speaking from experience 😺

a narrow steeper descent into the woods which is a bit of fun but trickier deeper in the woods as large loose stones make carrying speed tricky

Dropping down throught the trees and to the river feels prehistoric and anathama to the bare moorland above. Refil water in the stream and carry on towards the coast.

Took a detour up a hell climb to do this trail after the write up and pictures on this segment looked so good. Lots of fun with added climbing if you take the right turn by mistake and have to winch back up.

Somerset offers a wide selection of mountain bike trails, with over 300 routes documented on komoot. These routes cater to various skill levels, from easy rides to challenging difficult trails.
Yes, Somerset has nearly 100 easy-rated mountain bike trails, perfect for beginners or those looking for a more relaxed ride. These routes often feature gentler gradients and less technical terrain, allowing you to enjoy the scenic landscapes at a comfortable pace.
Somerset's diverse geology provides a varied mountain biking experience. You'll encounter dramatic limestone landscapes in the Mendip Hills, rolling hills and ancient woodlands in the Quantock Hills, and expansive moorlands and steep valleys within Exmoor National Park. This variety ensures a mix of challenging singletracks, forest paths, and open moorland rides.
Many of Somerset's mountain bike trails are designed as circular routes, allowing you to start and finish at the same point. For example, consider the Quantock Hills loop from Lydeard Hill car park or the Rowberrow Warren, Beacon Batch & Cheddar Gorge loop from Cheddar, both offering engaging circular rides through distinct landscapes.
Somerset's trails often lead to stunning natural features and viewpoints. In Exmoor, you might pass by the Dunkery Beacon Summit or Selworthy Beacon. The Mendip Hills offer dramatic views of Cheddar Gorge. The Coastal loop to the Valley of the Rocks also provides spectacular coastal scenery.
While less common on dedicated mountain bike trails, some areas in Somerset feature waterfalls that can be explored. For instance, you might find smaller cascades near St Audries Bay Waterfall or within Yeovil Country Park at Ninesprings Pond. These are often accessible via nearby paths rather than directly on technical MTB routes.
The mountain bike trails in Somerset are highly regarded by the komoot community, holding an average rating of 4.5 stars from over 400 reviews. Riders frequently praise the diverse landscapes, well-maintained paths, and the variety of routes available, from the challenging climbs in Exmoor to the scenic loops in the Quantock Hills.
Yes, for experienced riders seeking a challenge, Somerset offers 16 difficult-rated mountain bike trails. Routes like the Selworthy, Horner Woods & Periton Hill loop from Minehead in Exmoor National Park provide significant elevation gains and technical sections, testing your skills and endurance.
Somerset features several longer mountain bike routes for those looking for extended rides. Trails such as the Simonsbath & Exford loop from Lorna Doone, which covers nearly 30 miles, offer a full day's adventure through the region's varied terrain.
Spring and autumn generally offer the most pleasant conditions for mountain biking in Somerset, with milder temperatures and beautiful scenery. Summer can be great, but trails might be busier, especially in popular areas. Winter riding is possible, but be prepared for potentially muddy conditions and shorter daylight hours, particularly on moorland trails.
While many trailheads are best reached by car, some routes, particularly those starting near towns or villages, may have public transport links. For example, the Staple Fitzpaine loop starts from Taunton Station, making it accessible by train. It's always advisable to check local bus or train schedules for specific trail access points.
Generally, dogs are permitted on public bridleways and byways in Somerset, which form a significant part of the mountain biking network. However, it's crucial to keep dogs under close control, especially around livestock or in sensitive wildlife areas. Always check local signage and respect any specific restrictions, particularly within National Parks or nature reserves.
