The original parish church, dedicated to St. Martin, bishop of Tours, was built in the Lombard era, on the site where it is still visible today, near the neighboring parish church of S. Maria dell’Argine di Novi L., just outside the town of Pasturana, located one kilometer further north, near the current castle, where the geological edge of the Pleistocene terrace slopes sharply towards Basaluzzo. The temple of St. Martin underwent, over the centuries, substantial functional and architectural changes, clearly highlighted during the recent restoration and consolidation works promoted by the current Archpriest. In the Carolingian era, the church of St. Martin probably became the seat of a Benedictine monastic settlement. The entire territory of Pasturana, together with Novi L., Fresonara and others, was donated by Emperor Otto I and his wife Adelaide to the monastery of S. Salvatore in Pavia, around 970. The castle of Novi Ligure is located near the historic center of Novi Ligure and was for centuries the extreme northern border of the Republic of Genoa. It is part of the "Open Castles" circuit of Lower Piedmont. Only the tower and some sections of the surrounding walls remain of the castle, which today delimit part of the large park. It was crowned by a Ghibelline battlement which has been lost but is still perceptible, despite the current covering with a tile roof.

The castle is owned by Count Cesare Giriodi Panissera di Monastero. The construction of the manor dates back to the second half of the 1300s and acquired value in the following centuries due to its strategic position: the town was in fact located on the borders of the Republic of Genoa, with the Savoy State and the various Lombard duchies.
