Santuario della Pietrina If you follow the road from Iano that leads to Palagio and turn left onto the steep uphill road, you will arrive at the Santuario della Pietrina. Once there, you can see all that remains of the ancient Castello della Pietrina. Once the place where the sanctuary stands was called "Pietra", while today this name indicates the opposite hill where the foundations of an ancient watchtower remain and in the valley in the middle are the two lakes of the municipality of Montaione. The name is mentioned for the first time in a document from 1118 following a donation of two "della Pietra" houses to the parish church of San Gimignano. More certain information is available from the 14th century when the Castello della Pietra was conquered by San Gimignano and later subjugated to Florence. In 1835 it became part of the municipality of Montaione. The Sanctuary, dedicated to Saints Andrea and Agata, was expanded in 1890 and restored in 1927 and a few years ago. Today it is part of the diocese of Volterra. Until recently, the sanctuary housed a painting of the "Madonna with Child", a work by the Sienese painter Bartolo di Fredi (1353 - 1410), a student of Simone Martini who worked in nearby Volterra in those years. Today, only the central panel of the painting remains, depicting the "Madonna with Child" holding an apple. Today, the painting is kept in the bishop's palace in Volterra.

In the municipality of Palaia, about 4,500 inhabitants in the province of Pisa, the charming Vallicelle is an excellent destination for a nature adventure. The Chiecina stream is not far away and the dirt roads of this area of Tuscany are underrated.
