The reserve encompasses a variety of coastal habitats: from the pine/evergreen woodland (dominated by pines like Pinus pinaster and evergreen oaks/lecci), through “lame” (seasonally-waterlogged depressions), to fixed and mobile dunes and the beach itself. The dune vegetation is quite special: pioneer plants, dune grasses, stabilized dune shrubs, and also a distinctive “ginepro coccolone” (juniper) formation. Historically, before the 1700s, the area was more paludous (swampy) with ontani (alders), frassini, lecci; the pine forests were planted later as part of reclamation efforts. The beach is one of the few in Tuscany to remain in essentially natural condition, with dunes and minimal built infrastructure.
