The cable car alone currently costs €52 for an adult and €30 for children. Various packages are available that include guided tours. Alternatively, you can hike up below the cable car. It's steep, but only a 500-meter climb.

Climbing Cratere Piano del Lago is possible for everyone, although strenuous. Small lava stones pull you downwards with every step, so I felt like I had climbed the mountain twice.

Only recommended with a guide, as the terrain is constantly changing.

Well worth the trip and cable cart; although you can also climb upwards.

A completely different world! A must-see, even if the price of 80 euros is extremely high! For 80 euros, you can get to an altitude of 3,000 meters, including the cable car, bus, and guided hike!

Even in bad weather or under dark clouds, the trip up is worthwhile. The cable car takes you up to 1,900 meters. By the time we reached the top, the clouds had almost disappeared due to the wind.

One of the most beautiful lava tunnels on the north side of Mount Etna is the Serracozzo Grotto (surely often visited, but not signposted). A lava tunnel is not a cave, but rather one formed during an eruption, when a crust forms on the surface of the slowly flowing lava in flatter terrain. This "tunnel" is easy to enter (assuming there's no threat of a thunderstorm (flooding!) or ice and snow making entry dangerous). Don't forget your flashlight; two cave-ins in the ceiling provide sufficient light until halfway through the tunnel, after which it becomes very shallow and pitch-dark in places. It's worth exploring!

The region primarily offers moderate to difficult mountaineering routes across the volcanic landscapes of Mount Etna. There are 4 moderate and 8 difficult routes, totaling 12 routes, exploring ancient lava flows, volcanic craters, and high-altitude trails.
The mountaineering routes around Piedimonte Etneo are generally rated as moderate to difficult, focusing on the challenging volcanic terrain of Mount Etna. While some moderate paths might be suitable for older, experienced children, there are no routes specifically classified as 'easy' or 'family-friendly' in this selection. Always assess the difficulty and elevation gain carefully before setting out with children.
Route durations vary significantly based on distance and difficulty. For example, the Serracozzo Lava Tube loop from Monte Concazza is a moderate 3.6-mile (5.8 km) trail that typically takes around 2 hours 53 minutes. More challenging routes like the Piano Provenzana – Etna Crater loop from Piano Provenzana, which is 10.9 miles (17.5 km), can take over 7 hours to complete.
Yes, several routes are circular, allowing you to return to your starting point without retracing your steps. Examples include the Viewpoint Etna – Summit Craters of Mount Etna loop from Rifugio Giovannino Sapienza and the Serracozzo Lava Tube loop from Monte Concazza.
The routes offer unique geological formations. You can explore various volcanic features such as the Summit Craters of Mount Etna, Laghetto Crater, and the Silvestri Inferior Craters. Additionally, you might encounter lava tubes like the Serracozzo Cave.
Access to the very top of Mount Etna's summit craters is often restricted and requires a licensed volcanic guide, especially above certain altitudes (usually 2900m). It's crucial to check the current regulations and volcanic activity levels before planning your ascent. Local guides and park authorities can provide the most up-to-date information.
The best season generally depends on the specific route and desired conditions. Spring (April-June) and Autumn (September-October) offer milder temperatures and clearer skies, making them ideal for many routes. Summer can be very hot at lower elevations, while winter brings snow and ice, requiring specialized gear and experience for higher altitudes.
Given the volcanic and high-altitude terrain, essential gear includes sturdy hiking boots, layered clothing (even in summer, as weather can change rapidly), sun protection (hat, sunglasses, high-SPF sunscreen), plenty of water, snacks, and a first-aid kit. For higher or winter ascents, consider trekking poles, crampons, an ice axe, and a helmet. Always check the weather forecast and route conditions before you go.
While many trails in Sicily are generally accessible to dogs, specific restrictions may apply within protected areas or at higher elevations on Mount Etna due to volcanic activity or sensitive ecosystems. It's best to check with local park authorities or guide services regarding current rules for bringing dogs on specific mountaineering routes.
The routes are highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.8 stars from over 20 reviews. Mountaineers frequently praise the unique volcanic landscapes, the panoramic views of Sicily, and the opportunity to explore the active geological features of Mount Etna.
Parking availability varies by trailhead. For routes starting from popular access points like Rifugio Giovannino Sapienza or Piano Provenzana, you will typically find designated parking areas, though they may be paid during peak seasons. For less-trafficked routes, parking might be more limited, often roadside. Always check specific route details for parking information.
Yes, at major starting points for Mount Etna ascents, such as Rifugio Giovannino Sapienza or Piano Provenzana, you can usually find rifugios (mountain huts) or small cafes offering refreshments and basic amenities. However, once you are on the trails, especially on longer or more remote routes, services are scarce, so it's essential to carry enough water and food.
