The summit is difficult to reach; hiking poles are recommended as there are loose rocks and many old terraces to negotiate on poorly marked routes. Cloud formations make it exciting.

Magnificent view of the Ionian Sea and towards Etna from the top of the mountain. Further down you can see a departure-flight point very popular with paragliding enthusiasts

Beware that the top route is not currently available. It's a one way trip to the viewpoint and then back! We saw people updating the route, so hopefully this will be fixed soon. Take care that this is a pretty hectic route with a lot of climbing and hard to see tracks and A LOT of prickly bushes, so long trousers are definitely recommended

What is crazy is that the ground is still warm to hot 23 years after the eruption in 2001.

A must. Expensive, but worth it. Very impressive. Only with a mountain guide.

The region around Linguaglossa, on the northeastern slopes of Mount Etna, offers diverse peaks and areas. Key destinations include the Summit Craters of Mount Etna, Europe's highest active volcano, and the unique Monti Sartorius, a series of seven extinct craters. Piano Provenzana also serves as a significant tourist area and gateway to higher elevations.
Yes, the Monti Sartorius offer a relatively easy 3.5 to 4 km loop trail with modest elevation gain, making it suitable for families. The trails wind through beautiful birch forests and provide scenic views without being overly strenuous.
From higher elevations on Mount Etna, particularly around Piano Provenzana and the crater areas, you can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views. These often include the Ionian Sea, Taormina, and on clear days, even the coast of Calabria. The Monti Sartorius also offer spectacular views of the Ionian Sea and the Peloritani Mountains.
Yes, Linguaglossa provides direct access to the northern side of Mount Etna, which is a starting point for exploring the volcano. Hiking to the Summit Craters of Mount Etna is possible, but it is highly recommended to go with a mountain guide due to the active nature of the volcano and challenging conditions. The Laghetto Crater is another impressive volcanic feature you can explore.
The Monti Sartorius are unique because they are a series of seven aligned extinct craters, formed during an eruption in 1865, known as a 'buttonhole' eruption. The accessible loop trail winds through diverse ecosystems, including birch forests with the endemic Etna birch, offering a striking contrast between volcanic rock and vibrant flora.
Piano Provenzana, situated at approximately 1,800 meters, is a versatile hub. In winter, it transforms into a ski resort with 10 km of slopes, offering the unique experience of skiing on an active volcano with sea views. Throughout the year, it serves as a departure point for hiking, mountain biking, and 4x4 tours to explore Etna's craters and higher altitudes.
Absolutely. The area boasts the Ragabo Pine Forest on Etna's northern slope, which is Sicily's largest area of larch trees, offering picturesque hiking routes. Additionally, numerous lava tunnels, such as Grotta Corruccio, can be explored with a guide, providing insights into the volcano's internal structure.
The best time to visit for hiking generally depends on the elevation and desired experience. Spring and autumn offer pleasant temperatures for exploring the lower and mid-altitudes. Summer can be hot but is suitable for higher elevations. Winter transforms Piano Provenzana into a ski resort, offering unique winter sports opportunities.
For certain higher-altitude areas of Mount Etna, especially near the active summit craters, a mountain guide is required, and access may be restricted depending on volcanic activity. It's advisable to check local regulations and conditions before planning a trek to the summit areas. For general trails at lower elevations, permits are typically not needed.
