The castle is perched on a rugged rocky spur, from which it dominates the Alto Garda plain. Of the ancient fortress, the towers, part of the curtain walls and some ruined buildings remain intact, which suffered numerous assaults over the centuries. The last one was by French troops in August 1703, while the War of the Spanish Succession was being fought. Inside Arco Castle, thanks to a recent restoration, you can visit the Prigione del Sasso and the Torre Grande, whose walls are decorated with a splendid cycle of secular frescoes from the 14th century depicting ladies playing chess.

A fantastic destination for a Transalp. And in autumn, simply a dreamlike place to extend the summer a little longer.

One of those spots where the bike wins: in summer, finding car parking around the lake is a real headache — but on two wheels you just roll up to the shore, drop the bike and jump in. Clear, calm water and far fewer crowds than at Lake Garda itself

The wonderful cycle path that largely follows the Sarca river allows you to get from Riva del Garda to Sarche and from there climb towards the Limarò gorge or skirt Lake Toblino
