L'Isola degli Internati is a natural area located on the right bank of the Po River, within the municipal territory of Gualtieri, in the province of Reggio Emilia. Today it presents itself as a suggestive river oasis included in the UNESCO "Po Grande" biosphere reserve, but its name holds a deep historical significance linked to the post-World War II period. The island's name derives from a decision made in 1945 by the Municipality of Gualtieri. To cope with the severe economic and employment crisis of the time, the administration entrusted the management and timber exploitation of this strip of land to an agricultural cooperative formed by former prisoners and veterans from the town, survivors of the Nazi concentration camps (also known as Italian Military Internees or IMI). This concession allowed them to find an initial livelihood and to start over through work and timber production.

Apparently, the two characters, known far beyond Italy's borders and created by the writer Giovanni Guareschi (1908 to 1968), are having a brief conversation. After one of their – once again public and heated – verbal confrontations, the author of the still popular short stories has the priest address his eternal adversary with these beautiful words: "God be with you and enlighten you, Comrade Mayor, so that one day, after our earthly journey has ended, we may find each other side by side at the beginning of that road that leads to eternity."

It is first mentioned in 1140 and then in other documents in the following centuries as dependent on the Parish of Sorbolo. In a document from 1493, the church appears instead as dependent on the Abbess of Sant'Alessandro di Parma. By the 18th century, the old church was in a state of disrepair, and construction of the new building began (1793). The apse of the medieval church still stands in the current sacristy.
