Trulli - or trullo when you’re talking about just one dwelling - were initially built to provide temporary field shelters and storehouses. Over time they also became permanent dwellings for agricultural families and labourers of smallholdings. The simple traditional lime whitewash that decorates the trulli’s exterior complements the local geology and pastoral landscapes. To protect against the elements and balance the temperature all year round, the trulli walls are incredibly thick, made up of a double skin filled with rubble. Similarly, the doorways and windows are small. These iconic rural dwellings began appearing as early as the 14th century, and their popularity originated because of a 15th century decree that made urban settlers pay taxes to the crown under feudal rule. If the king’s inspectors came collecting, the villagers could easily demolish these inexpensive buildings into a pile of stones and hide in the forest, and then rebuild them once they’d gone.

Visiting the town during the Christmas period, everything appears with a certain atmosphere as the entire historic center is decorated for Christmas.

Gravina di Laterza is an impressive karst gorge located in Puglia, among the largest and most spectacular in Europe, with a length of over 12 km and a depth of over 200 meters. It was formed millions of years ago through the erosion of water in the limestone rocks, creating a unique landscape of steep walls and caves. From a naturalistic point of view, it hosts a rich biodiversity: rare species of flora and fauna find refuge here, including birds of prey such as the Egyptian vulture and the golden eagle. It is a paradise for hikers and nature lovers, ideal for geological explorations and birdwatching.

The Via Ellenica del Cammino Materano is one of the most evocative variants of the route, crossing breathtaking landscapes and historical sites. Passing through the Gravina di Laterza, it offers an extraordinary immersion in wild nature, between deep canyons and imposing rock walls, habitat of birds of prey and protected fauna. This stretch connects the territories of Magna Graecia, rich in history and culture, up to Matera, capital of the Sassi. Ideal for hikers looking for an authentic experience between uncontaminated nature and ancient traditions.
