A pleasant and challenging climb, with a quiet start, followed by a fairly regular section at 10% and then an easier section to the summit. Good road surface and pleasant route among the poplars.

The Salita di Pilano is a classic route connecting Crispiano to Martina Franca. It's lightly trafficked (always watch out for cars, as it's not a cycle path), and is about 4 km long at a 3-4% gradient, with peaks never exceeding 5%. The stretch through the woods is beautiful, providing shelter from the wind when you're caught in a headwind.

The Ponte Viadotto dell'Impero was built in the 1930s as an extension of the city center, from which you can admire the interesting Gravina, a deep and long karst ravine typical of Puglia. At the center of the ravine is the Trappeto del Duca, inside which a museum will be set up.

This year marks the 94th anniversary of the construction of our "Viadotto dell'Impero" Bridge, which crosses the Gravina, built in 1932. 🏛🛠⛏🏗 The Podestà was Cav. Angelo Raffaele Ostillio. The designer was Eng. Francesco Salerno from Francavilla Fontana. The contracting company was Elia from Ceglie Messapica. (Neglia-Biondi Archive) Thanks also to our local workers: foremen, bricklayers, carpenters, and all the laborers who contributed to the realization of this work commissioned by Benito Mussolini, along with the construction of the elementary school in Piazza Ostillio. How many couples exchanged their first kiss right here? 😄 The bridge is made up of 9 arches of local stone, "mazzaro", and was erected to expand the town to the east, which until the 1950s was known as the "Lizzito" district. Some say that at the two entrances there were medallions depicting the Duce.

About a century ago, our fathers built a magnificent bridge in local stone, called the Viaduct of the Empire, consisting of nine round arches, with the aim of connecting the two banks of the Gravina, between the historic district and the Lizzito district, and to allow a larger and more orderly urban expansion in an area close to the town that has always been unreachable due to the deep depression formed by the Gravina. The viaduct, still in excellent structural condition, is about 120 ml. long and reaches a maximum height of about 18 meters at the central arch, from the top of which you can see the Ionian Sea and the Salento plain.
