October 26, 2025, War Memorial of Borgia

Monument to the Borgia Fallen The Monument to the Borgia Fallen is one of the most solemn and significant symbols of the city's historical memory. Located in the town villa in Piazza Ortona, it represents a place of meditation, reflection, and collective identity. It was built between 1935 and 1936 by the Roman firm Giuseppe Ciocchetti, based on a design by the sculptor Colosimo, during a historic period when many Italian municipalities erected monuments honoring the fallen of the two World Wars. The structure is made entirely of travertine and rests on a base with a pedestal and steps, from which a quadrangular block rises. Marble plaques bearing the names of the Borgese soldiers who fell in both conflicts are attached to the sides. Decorative elements include a laurel wreath with a central sword and marble discs, symbols of military valor and victory. At the center of the work is the most important sculptural group: an angel with feminine features, holding a lifeless soldier with a tender and moving gesture while kissing his forehead. This touching image conveys a powerful message of compassion, protection, and gratitude to those who sacrificed their lives for their homeland. Originally located in the center of the square, the monument was moved to its current flowerbed in 1957, where it still stands today, surrounded by greenery and visible from all sides. In addition to its artistic value, the war memorial represents a fundamental reference during the civil and religious ceremonies on November 4th and other commemorative occasions. It is, in every sense, a place of remembrance, uniting history, art, and civic feeling in a single space shared by generations of citizens. They are by no means mere relics of a bygone era, the "Monumento dei' Caduti" found almost everywhere in villages and towns, commemorating the many victims of war and tyranny. Their design varies, but what they all have in common is that they constantly remind us of the need to preserve peace.
