The Sanctuary of the Madonna dell'Alto, located at 1,819 meters on Monte Alto, is one of the highest Marian shrines in Italy and offers a sweeping view of Sicily. On clear days, it is said that from here you can see much of the island, all the way to Mount Etna, and sometimes even the sea.

A large metal summit cross, easy access from Ref. Crispi, wonderful landscape in the Parco delle Madonie, views in all directions, the most spectacular certainly to Castelbuono towards the sea (N)...it's worth it...also later on the stop at the CAS hut Ref. Crispi

What a fantastic view from up here! (360°). A wooden sign marks the summit (Sicily's second highest!). The path is steep on all sides but always easy to walk, never really exposed; only loose rocks could pose a problem. The area was apparently quite busy in the past (ski lifts, etc.), but nature is slowly reclaiming the infrastructure...great beech "groves"!

Unfortunately, when I visited in May 2024 it was completely covered in clouds. But normally there is a fantastic view of the Madonie.

The two most prominent peaks accessible from Castellana Sicula are Pizzo Carbonara (1,979 m), the highest peak in the Madonie Mountains and second-highest in Sicily, and Cozzo Luminario (1,512 m), known for its expansive views. Other notable peaks include Monte San Salvatore (1,912 m) and Monte Cervi (1,794 m).
Pizzo Carbonara is significant as the highest peak in the Madonie Mountains and the second-highest in Sicily. It features a distinctive karst limestone landscape and offers breathtaking 360-degree panoramic views that can encompass almost the entire island, including Mount Etna on clear days. The area is also rich in diverse flora and fauna, such as the endemic Nebrodi Violet.
Hiking to Cozzo Luminario Summit (1,512 m) offers a beautiful journey to a summit cross, providing great views of the surrounding Madonie landscape in all directions. It's often part of longer routes, including excursions through a giant holly forest, adding to its natural appeal.

The peaks in the Madonie Park offer a range of hiking experiences. For example, the ascent of Pizzo Carbonara is generally considered moderate, with a well-marked circular trail taking approximately 3 to 3.5 hours for an 8km loop with an elevation gain of 400m. Some routes, like those to Monte San Salvatore, are classified as challenging. The karst landscape can mean loose rocks, and while cooler temperatures provide relief from coastal heat, mist can sometimes obscure views.

While many peaks offer intermediate to challenging trails, the Madonie Park generally provides varied hiking experiences.
