The castle of Bütgenbach has a chequered history. Originally owned by the Counts of Limburg, it was destroyed several times over the centuries and always partially rebuilt. As early as the 13th century, the first destructions occurred, and later the complex suffered considerable damage, including from French troops in 1689. Subsequently, only individual parts were used for residential purposes, while large areas fell into disrepair or were demolished. With the extinction of the Monschau-Bütgenbach dynasty, the castle passed into the possession of other noble families before it was finally abandoned. Today, only a few remains of the former castle complex are preserved. Source: An information board located nearby.

From the cycle path you have a great view of the villages behind it (but only in places because of the dense bushes).

The castle of Burg-Reuland is one of the most beautiful and largest castle ruins in the Ardennes. It was built in the 12th century and was a huge complex until the 18th century. The current ruin complex still measures 55 meters by 65 meters and is only a small part of the former castle. The massive walls that once enclosed the castle square and reached into the Ulft valley no longer exist.
