Scărișoara Cave

Highlight • Cave

The Scărișoara Cave is located at about 1100 m above sea level in the Romanian Apuseni Mountains. The cave can be easily reached on foot in about half an hour from the small village of Ghetari. You can get to Ghetari via a narrow road from Gârda de Sus (about 10 km). The nearest train station is in the town of Câmpeni, about 40 kilometers away. The cave is part of the Apuseni Nature Park and its underground ice block is considered to be one of the largest in Europe (with a thickness of up to 26 meters). The ice has probably existed there for a very long time (glacial relic). Guided tours are also offered in this exciting cave complex with bizarre stalactites, impressive icicles and other partially illuminated ice formations in the deeper part of the cave. Highly recommended!

Sighiștel Gorge

Highlight (Segment) • Gorge

Walk along and through the Sighistel stream, at the end of the Canyon is very narrow and ends at a small waterfall. Great experience, best with shoes that can get wet (very slippery!).

A beautiful trail begins with an incline and then leads level through a pristine jungle. The trail is clearly marked with a yellow cross. Fallen trees overgrown with moss and mushrooms, caves, eroded rocks, and woodpeckers – it truly is like an enchanted world!

Very nice, know that you can't really get here by car, probably by ATV or 4x4. Or you can walk from anywhere in Poiana Calineasa! They are not bad dogs, or sheep.

Path has not yet been cleared. The marking (yellow cross) is only occasionally visible. Challenging to walk through - you'll definitely need a GPS to keep you on track.

Best to park on the national road and use the main hiking trail from there.

TransUrsoaia is a connecting road between Albac (Alba county) and Huedin (Cluj county) - crossing the lands of the "Moti" people, a spectacular , but less known road. The road is passing near the Belis-Fantanele lake - there are several spots suitable for some very nice pictures. It's a narrow road, but great for cycling and life's memories.

August 15, 2021, Scarisoara cave

I got the Scarisoara cave by hiking from Arieseni. That way is 9 km oneway and the whole round trek takes at around 7 hours. Through the way you can see traditional farms and mountain houses. Views to both valleys are marvellous.
