Here a floodplain crosses the forest supply path. For hikers, field stones have been laid in the riverbed. Nearby is a water basin, two fallen fir trees and a huge, old metal pipe that could perhaps be recycled for a future tunnel?

Old fruit varieties are not only a valuable cultural asset, but also important for biodiversity, as they are often more resistant to diseases and climate change. They also provide habitat and food for many insect species.

The Aukrug Nature Park Association planted another 30 fruit trees in 2022. This time, they planted them on the hiking trail next to the Kiesgruben Lake. The trail is stunning, not only when the fruit is in bloom or ripening – it offers hikers a beautiful view to the east over the lake, which is also the wintering grounds of the rare Bewick's swans.

Where the Bewick's swans are guests in winter, you can sunbathe and splash around on the fine sandy beach of the lake in summer.

It's good to know that this hut exists. It belongs to the SH State Forestry Service, but if you clean up after yourself, you can certainly have a picnic or a child's birthday party here. Especially when the weather is bad.
