At the lower end of the street, the Powder Tower rises, which once fortified the southwestern corner of the city wall and housed the city's powder magazine. The tower probably dates from the mid-15th century and also served as a prison at times. According to legend, Black Peter from Schinderhannes' robber gang was allegedly held here. The former toll and defensive castle of Linz, built in 1365 by Archbishop Engelbert III, was originally integrated into the city walls and thus served as the northwestern corner tower of the city fortifications. From the castle, a passage led along the city wall to the Rhine gate and the adjacent customs house. Some parts of the building, including the tower and the main entrance to the south, still belong to the medieval structure. After 1707, the complex, once surrounded by a pond and castle garden, was redesigned and expanded several times. In 1821, the castle came into the possession of the Rhine toll inspector Anton Feith. Iron anchors on the northern outer wall still bear his name. Structural changes such as the demolition of the wooden bridge over the now-filled-in pond and the construction of the wide stone staircase fall into this period. From 1950, it was temporarily owned by the city, and since 1984, the castle has been privately owned again.
