"When the plague raged in the region in the first half of the 17th century, the dead are said to have found their final resting place in the wells," say the book's authors. Only when the residents made a promise to God to celebrate a mass in the chapel every year on the eve of St. Sebastian's Day, on January 19th, were they spared from the "Black Death". It is this story that has also earned the church the nickname "Plague Chapel".
