In the second half of the 19th century, a cavity (ice cellar) was hewn into the Bunter sandstone strata exposed here in the Schützental valley. The ice cellar was formerly used as a cooling cellar and also as a shelter. Source: https://www.eifel.de/go/sehenswertes-detail/eiskeller_hillesheim.html

From here starts a Way of the Cross to the Marienkapelle Wahlhausen. The bronze sculptures on the wayside shrines were created around 1980 by the Adenau artist Gering.

The location of the church and the Michael's patronage suggest a pre-Christian place of worship on the site of the church (Schug). The church stands on the site of a castle belonging to the Counts of Hochstaden, which became the property of Blankenheim in 1282. (BAT 71, 203, Wackenroder). The wall body and cellar room of the sacristy probably go back to the castle chapel. A church is first mentioned in 1501, but is probably older. The nave, which was already described as dilapidated in 1687, was probably rebuilt in 1711, while the church tower of the previous building (1556?) was preserved (Becker). This has been replaced since 1923 by the mighty west tower (Schug), built according to a design by the architects Peter Marx and Peter Gracher (Trier). The Wahlhausen pilgrimage chapel is located on a hilltop of the same name near Steffeln. I have already seen this chapel from various towns in Hillesheimer and Gerolsteiner Land because it is in a very exposed location. That's why I went up today to enjoy the view from up here. I have to say it was worth it! The air wasn't clear today, but I'll definitely come here again if the visibility is good. Today I could see Hillesheim, Gönnersdorf and, of course, Steffeln very well.
