Norfolk’s Broad appeal
For many hikers, the unique draw of the Norfolk Broads is irresistible. Benefiting from the same protections afforded to a national park, the Broads are a network of navigable rivers and lakes formed by the flooding of peat workings. Many of the best hiking trails in Norfolk explore this verdant labyrinth of gentle waterways. Sprawling over 117 square miles (303 km2), there are almost endless trails and byways for you to range across this sparkling landscape.
The Broads teem with life. Amble along the water’s edge, watching barges and yachts navigate the calm channels alongside graceful swans and buzzing insects. There are encounters with nature at every turn; marsh harriers and kingfishers are a common sight. Charming windmills and watermills are characteristic of the region, forming quaint backdrops for your photos.
A dynamic, thriving coastline
The county boasts 90 miles (145 km) of unspoilt coastline, so it is no wonder there are some incredible coastal walks around Norfolk. Norfolk Coast AONB stretches from the iconic striped cliffs of Hunstanton in the west to Horsey in the east, where seals come ashore to breed in winter. If you like dazzling displays of wildlife whilst you hike, this is the place for you.
This is a dynamic coastline. Migrating birds from as far as Greenland and Siberia flock to the region through the winter, whilst each season brings new inhabitants. The land itself is constantly reshaped by the relentless rhythm of the tides and the coming of the occasional storm. Regardless of the time of year, the AONB is an incredible place to hike and repeat visits are never the same.
A Wash with hiking options
There are so many more options for fantastic hikes around Norfolk. The desolate beauty of the Wash, England’s largest bay, offers yet more fantastic birdlife. Ensure you stick to footpaths in this region, as the tidal marshes can be dangerous. A hinterland of rolling countryside awaits inland, where Norfolk’s thriving market towns, country lanes and forests of native conifer promise many delightful rambles. Come summer, fields of lavender, blossoming wildflowers and massive horizons make this a stupendous place to roam.
Yes, Norfolk's flat terrain makes it ideal for families and those seeking accessible paths. The Whitlingham Broad – family walks in the Broads trail is a popular choice, offering an easy, well-surfaced path around the water, perfect for pushchairs and little legs.
Many trails in Norfolk are dog-friendly, but it's important to check for local restrictions, especially on beaches during bird nesting season and in areas with livestock. Thetford Forest is generally a great place for a walk with your dog, with numerous paths to explore. Always keep your dog under control and follow the Countryside Code.
For a classic woodland experience, Thetford Forest is unmatched in the region. It's the UK's largest man-made lowland forest and offers countless trails. For a more varied landscape, the Sheringham Park & Weybourne loop combines beautiful parkland, woods, and coastal views.
For wildlife spotting, the North Norfolk coast is exceptional. The Horsey Mere loop to Horsey beach is famous for its seal colony, especially during the winter pupping season. For birdwatching, the coastal marshes around Cley and Titchwell are internationally renowned, and the Norfolk Wildlife Trust's Holme Dunes visitor centre is a highly-regarded starting point for exploring coastal habitats.
While Norfolk is predominantly flat, it does have some gentle hills and undulating terrain, particularly in North Norfolk around the Cromer Ridge. For a walk with some elevation and rewarding views, try the Cromer & Overstrand loop, which follows the clifftops and offers a bit more of a workout than the Broads.
The Broads are best explored by the water's edge. The Horsey Mere and Dunes – autumn in the Broads walk provides a fantastic experience, combining a path alongside the mere with a walk out to the coast, passing iconic windmills along the way.
Many Norfolk villages have excellent pubs that serve as great start or end points for a walk. The Castle Acre loop to West Acre is a great example. It's a moderate circular route that starts in a historic village with pubs, allowing you to enjoy a rewarding meal or drink after your hike.
