A Purple Path artwork: "What does it mean to be at home? „To be physically present in one place, anchored in the moment, yet with thoughts far away", as the artist Karolin Schwab describes it herself. In her project My Floating Home, Schwab, born in 1987 in Stralsund and living in Berlin, pursues the question raised here with site-specific sculptures that, in their external form, recall the outlines of a house and stand in the water. In Niederwiesa, OT Braunsdorf, the artist places red powder-coated square tubes in situ like a fleeting, three-dimensional sketch of a house in the Mühlgraben, a bypass of the Zschopau. While Karolin Schwab's first sculpture My Floating Home stands a few hundred meters away from the Danish Arken Museum of Modern Art on the wide, reflective surface of the Baltic Sea, the work conceived for Braunsdorf squeezes between the banks of the ditch created to operate the nearby grain mill. With the change of seasons, constantly changing images are created between the red house outline and the surroundings, both literally and figuratively, in the water. Niederwiesa is a place of apparent opposites between the baroque Lichtenwalde Castle with its art collections, parks, and water features, and the textile industry, which settled in the Braunsdorf district around 1800 and commissioned Saxony's first machine spinning mill. What connects art and work is the Zschopau, which meanders through the landscape. Its water fed (and feeds) both the baroque fountains in the Lichtenwalde landscape park and the former cloth and yarn factories, as well as the still existing grain mill.

A Purple Path artwork: "On the rear facade of the small industrial museum Schauweberei Braunsdorf in Niederwiesa, a vertically elongated mural by the artist Anja Schwörer, born in Kandel in 1971 and now living in Berlin, has been installed. Colored squares, arranged next to each other, form a geometric image when viewed from the opposite bank of the Mühlbach. It is reminiscent of plant tendrils and flowers composed of pixels on a computer screen. The artist has isolated individual elements and detached them from the uniformity of the grid drawing. They shift perfection into a lively, almost organic-looking composition. The pixel dots printed on PVC mesh in a green-violet color spectrum mix on-site with the coloring of the wall, which shimmers through the net-like texture of the fabric. Grids and basic shapes of Schwörer's mural Mapping Patterns: Industrial Flora refer to fabric structures, woven ornaments, and the functioning of looms, which are documented, researched, and demonstrated on historical machines at the Schauweberei. As a thematic template, the artist chose a pattern drawing from 1897, which served as a schematic representation of a textile weave in the textile industry for the production of borders, ornaments, jacquard fabrics, or tapestries. These templates were designed by female artists and pattern designers up until the 1950s, translated into a kind of early programming language, and punched into punch cards, by means of which the looms were controlled. Thus, Schwörer's mural poetically, playfully, and location-specifically also recalls the origins of computer linguistics, which obviously has its roots in the control of looms and is therefore not really an invention of the 20th century."

currently (March 2026) impassable and closed!!! There are several fallen trees on the path. Adventurous hikers may climb over or crawl under them, but this is then certainly at your own risk. It was too strenuous for me - I looked for an alternative route.
