Reaching the parking lot of the Sanctuary of the Holy Trinity requires a challenging climb. The view from up here, however, makes all the effort worthwhile.

Descending through a beautiful beech forest from the SS Trinità parking lot, you reach the Cippi Papalini. Two centuries ago, they were the border between the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies and the Papal States, now Abruzzo and Lazio. We are also at the intersection of the three provinces of Rome, L'Aquila, and Frosinone.

Refreshment on the Trail Pereto Campo Rotondo

The refuge is managed by the CAI section of Avezzano, it is not always open and you need to call to reserve beds or other activities (cell +39 345 162 6570). It doesn't have a winter room, so if you arrive and it's closed you have to camp outside. The refuge is located in a wonderful area: right at the entrance to the Majelama valley and at the foot of the imposing Cafornia mountain.

Capistrello offers a selection of traffic-free gravel bike trails, with three routes detailed in this guide. These routes provide a great starting point for exploring the region's diverse landscapes by gravel bike.
The best seasons for gravel biking in Capistrello are typically spring and autumn, when temperatures are pleasant and the scenery is vibrant. While summer offers warmer conditions, higher elevation routes can provide cooler air for a more comfortable ride.
Yes, for experienced riders seeking a challenge, Capistrello offers routes with significant elevation gains. Consider the Ristorante I Bucaneve – Border of the Papal State loop from Campo Rotondo, which is rated difficult and features continuous climbs and descents. Another demanding option is the Rifugio Casale da Monte – Canale Spring loop from Avezzano, covering over 31 km with substantial climbing.
You can expect a rich variety of scenery, from dramatic limestone rock formations and lush green woods to abundant watercourses. Many routes traverse mountainous terrain, offering panoramic views of the Valle Roveto and access to areas like the Monte Salviano Nature Reserve. You'll also find sections that wind through karst valleys.
Yes, all the routes featured in this guide are circular, allowing you to start and end at the same point. For example, the Observation Tower – Ristorante I Bucaneve loop from Campo Rotondo offers a moderate 19.9 km ride, perfect for a scenic loop.
Along the trails, you can discover several natural highlights. The Monte Salviano Pass offers spectacular panoramic views. You might also encounter the serene Campo Ceraso Volubro or the charming Small Waterfall. The Campitelle Spring is another notable natural monument in the region.
Capistrello and its surroundings are rich in history. You can explore ancient villages with cobbled streets, and the region is home to the remains of Claudius's Emissary, Roman-era tunnels built to drain Lake Fucino. The Ristorante I Bucaneve – Border of the Papal State loop will take you past a historical site marking the border of the Papal State, offering great views.
The region's gravel trails feature a mixed terrain of dirt roads, dedicated trails, and some unpaved sections. These conditions are ideal for gravel bikes, e-gravel bikes, and mountain bikes, providing a true off-road experience away from traffic.
Yes, some routes pass by or near refuges and huts. For instance, the Rifugio Casale da Monte – Canale Spring loop is named after a refuge. Other options in the wider area include Francesco Fonte La Spina Refuge and Colle Mozzone Hut, which can be points of interest for a break.
