Lovely quiet route. Best when dry, and heading from Kiveton towards Worksop (downhill)

Turner wood is a particularly picturesque place with the canal side cottages and the locks, there also seems to be a couple of resident Swan families too, a lovely place to ride or walk but there is a dismount sign in front of the cottages so please respect this 🙏🙏

I’m not usually a canal tow path rider but it has to be said that the Chesterfield canal is pretty with many picturesque locks and canal side cottages, lovely place 🥰🥰

This small ‘pop up’ cafe is open during late Spring & Summer time. She’s closed during the cold wet months of winter. Find more details on Facebook. https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100043413387249

Frequently Asked Questions

How many family-friendly hiking trails are available in Rhodesia?

There are over 250 family-friendly hiking routes in the Rhodesia region, ranging from easy strolls to more moderate adventures. This guide focuses on selecting the best options for families with children.

What makes the Rhodesia region suitable for family hikes?

The Rhodesia region, encompassing areas like Zimbabwe's Eastern Highlands and Matobo Hills, offers a diverse range of landscapes perfect for families. You'll find everything from gentle paths through rolling hills and forests to more adventurous trails with unique rock formations and stunning viewpoints. Many areas are within national parks, providing safe and well-maintained environments for exploration.

Are there any easy, short walks suitable for toddlers or strollers?

While many trails in the region involve natural terrain, some areas offer flatter, well-maintained paths that could be suitable for strollers or very young children. For example, shorter sections around national park visitor centers or designated nature walks often provide easier access. Always check specific trail conditions before heading out.

What are some popular circular routes for families in Rhodesia?

Many of the family-friendly trails in Rhodesia are designed as loops, allowing you to start and end at the same point without retracing your steps. While specific route names vary by location, you can often find circular paths in areas like Nyanga National Park or around the Matobo Hills that offer a complete experience. An example of a moderate circular route is the Chesterfield Canal Path – Thorpe Top Treble Lock loop from Worksop, which is just under 10 km.

What kind of natural attractions can we expect to see on family hikes?

The Rhodesia region is rich in natural beauty. Depending on where you hike, you might encounter spectacular waterfalls in the Eastern Highlands, unique granite rock formations (dwalas) in the Matobo Hills, or diverse flora and fauna in national parks. The Zambezi River also offers incredible views, especially near Victoria Falls. For specific points of interest, consider exploring highlights like Dead Man's Hole or Creswell Crags: Gorge and Lake.

What is the best time of year for family hiking in Rhodesia?

The cooler, drier months, typically from May to October, are generally ideal for hiking in Rhodesia. During this period, temperatures are more comfortable, and there's less rainfall, making trails more accessible and wildlife viewing often better. The wet season (November to April) can bring lush landscapes but also higher temperatures and potential for muddy trails.

Are there any caves or historical sites to explore along the trails?

Yes, the region offers fascinating historical and geological sites. The Matobo Hills, for instance, are famous for ancient rock art and unique rock formations. You can also find notable caves, such as Robin Hood's Cave, Creswell Crags and Church Hole Cave, which provide intriguing stops for families interested in history and geology.

What do other hikers enjoy most about family hiking in Rhodesia?

The komoot community highly rates the family-friendly trails in Rhodesia, with an average score of 4.56 stars. Reviewers often praise the diverse landscapes, the opportunity to experience unique natural wonders, and the sense of adventure these trails offer for all ages. Many appreciate the well-marked paths and the chance to connect with nature.

Are there options for less crowded family hikes?

While popular spots can attract visitors, the Rhodesia region is vast. To find less crowded options, consider exploring trails slightly off the main tourist routes within national parks or visiting during off-peak hours. Many local guides can also recommend hidden gems that offer a more secluded family experience.

What are some moderate family hiking options in the region?

For families looking for a bit more challenge, there are numerous moderate trails available. These often feature slightly longer distances or more varied terrain, but are still manageable for active children. An example is The Lock Keeper – Chesterfield Canal Path loop from Worksop, which covers nearly 10 km with gentle elevation changes, offering a rewarding experience without being overly strenuous.

Where can we find parking for family hikes in Rhodesia?

Most national parks, nature reserves, and popular trailheads in Rhodesia offer designated parking areas, often with clear signage. It's always advisable to check specific route details or park websites in advance for information on parking availability and any associated fees, especially during peak seasons.
