The castle gained greater fame through the stay of Napoleon Bonaparte, who used it as his headquarters during the Fourth Coalition War from April to June 1807. When he first saw the castle, Napoleon exclaimed: „Enfin un château“ (Finally a castle). The Treaty of Finckenstein between France and Persia was also signed at this location. Napoleon spent his time at Finckenstein Castle with the Polish Countess Maria Walewska. After Friedrich Alexander Graf Dohna-Schlobitten, the son-in-law of Count Finckenstein, Alexander II von Dohna and then his second son Wilhelm Graf Dohna took over the Finckenstein estate.
