Pilcza Castle in Smoleń is a picturesque ruin of a medieval stronghold, situated on a lofty hill amidst the forests of the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland. The castle was once the seat of the mighty Toporczyk family, and later became associated with the Pilecki family – hence its name. Today, you can visit the restored tower and fragments of the defensive walls, from which there is an extensive view of the surrounding area. The castle is an attraction of the Eagle's Nests Trail and a great stopping point on a bicycle trip through the Jura – although the ascent to the ruins is steep, it is worth taking shoes for a short walk.

It looks innocent from the outside, but the view from the tower is beautiful - be sure to go in there!

Pilcza Castle in Smoleń is well worth a visit. The round keep is visible from afar and has been accessible since the castle ruins were secured and partially reconstructed in 2015. Admission costs 9 zł (as of 2021). You can walk around the castle hill, as shown on the Komoot map. Please note: The western and eastern parts of the castle must be visited separately. There are two separate staircases. The keep can only be reached via the western part. The climb is worthwhile. From up there, you have a wonderful panoramic view.

The central square of Pilica is worth seeing if you are around. The large rectangular square is surrounded by a street with lots of parking spaces. In terms of traffic, it is a very large roundabout with a circumferential one-way street. The town hall is located on the square. The square is surrounded by small shops, where you can actually find everything for your daily needs. This cannot be taken for granted in such a small town with only 2000 inhabitants.

Zamek Pilcza in Smoleń is located on a wooded hill in a small nature reserve. In the middle of the 14th century, Otto von Pilcza probably built a new brick stronghold from the Topór coat of arms. The original shape of the castle was a small stone building with a tall tower. Later the property was systematically expanded by adding two lower locks. Source: orlegniazda.pl google translation from Polish. And now it becomes clear: the castle is named after its builder and not after its location.
