In Mullingar the Old Railway Track and the Royal Canal Way can be seen, two very nice Greenways connecting West and East Ireland through the beautiful Irish Midlands.

At some few (old railway stations) spots there is seating and table for a proper picknick.

The Old Rail Trail is part of the Ireland Greenway network. It weaves its way from the bustling town of Athlone and ends in the delightful old market town of Mullingar, County Westmeath. Your journey between these two charming hotspots will be nothing but birdsong and the whirr of spokes as you whizz along on this quality 43 kilometre (27 mi) cycle path.

Lough Boora Discovery Park is a great outdoor park with a large amount of amazing sculptures, wildlife, bike and walking trails. It is a great family friendly place to relax with friends and family amidst an historic peat bog landscape with a variety of different things to see and do. There is bike hire available, you can walk the fairy trail or the sculpture park, go bird watching from lakeside hides and of course there is the all important cafe.

The sculptures and the whole sculpture display concept at the Lough Boora Parklands are awesome. It is meant to remind you that this are was once a peat bog and a lot of harvesting was done here. The amazing Sky Train sculpture is a reminder that they even used trains to transport the peat.

There is a brilliant twitcher hut at this point which is on stilts and it has a thatched roof. You have a great vantage point from here over the lake and if you are lucky you might see some birdlife or other wildlife.

This is a must do cycle for anyone who likes getting out on their bike. The Old Rail Trail Greenway is about 43 kilometres (27 mi) of biking heaven. With lots of entry and exit points, you can hop on and off to explore the villages and attractions along the way. Be it from Athlone to Moate or the ambitious full route all the way to Mullingar.
