An absolute must along the roadside. The world-famous octagonal church is not only a photo opportunity from the outside, but also extremely worth seeing from the inside. Our tip: Press the tape recorder for the history of the church – it's made exciting for children too! ⛪️ Checked & found to be absolutely family-relaxed by @wanderfamilie.erzgebirge

Historically, the "Göhren Gate" was part of the Lichtenwald deer enclosure in the middle of the 18th century. On the one hand, it served as a transport link between Neuhausen and Göhren (Kliny). On the other hand, it prevented game from escaping from the enclosure, which was up to 2575 hectares in size. After 1931, the areas were reduced, the gate fell into disrepair, and the connecting path to Bohemia was no longer used after 1945. This hiking connection has been open again since 2007. An information board with a seating area reminds us of earlier times.

Especially in winter, it is worth taking a short stop to marvel at the naturally created "ice formations".

The Chomutov District offers a significant number of routes suitable for gravel biking with minimal traffic. Our guide features over 50 such routes, ranging from moderate to difficult, ensuring a diverse selection for various skill levels.
You can expect a varied landscape. The northern part of the district, within the Ore Mountains (Krušné hory), features challenging terrain with significant elevation changes, dense forests, and unpaved roads. In contrast, the Podkrušnohorská Basin offers gentler, rolling terrain. Routes like the View from Pöhlberg – Dreimaa Water Wheel loop can involve substantial climbs, with over 1800 meters of elevation gain over 80 km, while others offer more moderate challenges.
While many routes in the Ore Mountains can be challenging, the Bezruč Valley (Bezručovo údolí) offers a main cycle path that is generally suitable for families, often shared with in-line skaters. This valley is known for its beautiful natural environment and is a great option for less strenuous rides away from traffic. For specific family-friendly gravel routes, it's best to check individual tour details for difficulty and terrain.
Many natural areas and trails in the Chomutov District are dog-friendly, especially in the Ore Mountains and Bezruč Valley. However, it's always recommended to keep dogs on a leash, especially in nature reserves or near wildlife. Be sure to check local regulations for specific trails or protected areas you plan to visit.
The region is rich in natural beauty and historical sites. You might cycle past the picturesque Přísečnice Reservoir, explore the deep Bezruč Valley, or discover historical ruins like Königsmühle (Králův Mlýn) or Hasištejn Castle. The Ore Mountains also offer numerous viewpoints with panoramic vistas.
Yes, many of the no-traffic gravel routes in the Chomutov District are designed as circular loops, allowing you to start and end at the same point. Examples include the Přísečnice Reservoir loop or the View of Fichtelberg – Cotta Beech loop. These are ideal for day trips, as they eliminate the need for shuttle services.
The best time for gravel biking in the Chomutov District is generally from late spring to early autumn (May to October). During these months, the weather is most favorable, and trails are typically dry and clear. The Ore Mountains can experience snow earlier and later in the season, so always check local conditions, especially for higher elevation routes.
Many trailheads, especially those leading into the Bezruč Valley or the Ore Mountains, offer designated parking areas. Larger towns like Chomutov also provide parking options. When planning your route, look for tours that start and end in locations with known parking facilities, or consider routes that begin near villages or attractions where parking is available.
Yes, some starting points are accessible by public transport, particularly those closer to larger towns like Chomutov. The region has a network of local buses, and some train lines might serve areas near trail access points. However, for more remote mountain trails, public transport options may be limited, and driving to a trailhead might be more practical.
The komoot community highly rates the gravel biking experience in the Chomutov District, with an average score of 4.37 stars. Reviewers often praise the diverse landscapes, from the challenging Ore Mountains to the serene Bezruč Valley, and the extensive network of unpaved roads and forest paths that offer a true escape from traffic.
While many of the routes are designed to be traffic-free, some pass through or near small villages and towns where you can find cafes, pubs, or small shops. The Bezruč Valley, for instance, has some facilities. For longer, more remote rides, especially in the higher Ore Mountains, it's advisable to carry sufficient water and snacks, as refreshment stops might be infrequent.
