An easy walk from the parking area on a semi-paved road, Au Train Falls are a great family-friendly walk. The falls drop around 40 feet over a series of small cascades. The falls are best seen in the spring time when wetter weather means that the flow will be higher.

There are three easy, family-friendly hiking routes available in the Rock River Canyon Wilderness area that are perfect for exploring with children. These trails offer a great way to experience the natural beauty of the region.
Yes, the Au Train Falls Trail is a great option for families looking to see a waterfall. While the Rock River Falls within the wilderness area can be rugged and less marked, the Au Train Falls offer a more accessible experience. The trail to Au Train Falls is relatively short and easy, making it suitable for younger hikers.
The family-friendly trails in this area offer glimpses into the diverse landscapes of the region. You'll encounter second-growth forests, which are home to various northern hardwoods and conifers. While the dramatic canyons and sandstone caves are more characteristic of the wilderness's rugged interior, the easier trails provide a pleasant forest experience. Keep an eye out for local wildlife like deer and various bird species.
Generally, dogs are welcome on trails within the Hiawatha National Forest, which encompasses the Rock River Canyon Wilderness. However, it's always best to keep them on a leash and ensure you clean up after them. Check specific trail regulations before you go, as rules can vary.
Spring and fall are often ideal for family hikes. In spring, the waterfalls are particularly impressive, and the forest comes alive. Fall offers beautiful foliage. Summer can be pleasant, but be prepared for insects. Winter transforms the area, with attractions like the Eben Ice Caves, but trails can be challenging and require appropriate gear.
In spring, conditions can be muddy, especially near water features. We recommend waterproof hiking boots for everyone. Layers are key, as temperatures can fluctuate; include a waterproof or water-resistant outer shell. Long pants are advisable to protect against ticks and brush. Don't forget hats, sunscreen, and insect repellent.
The Au Train Songbird Trail offers a pleasant loop experience, allowing families to enjoy a varied walk without retracing their steps. It's an easy route designed for a relaxing outing.
Specific parking information is usually available on the individual komoot tour pages. For trails like the Au Train Falls Trail, designated parking areas are typically found near the trailhead. Access to the broader Rock River Canyon Wilderness is primarily from M-94, with Federal Forest Road (FFR) 2276 being a key access point, though it can be very rough and may require a 4WD vehicle for deeper exploration.
While the Rock River Canyon Wilderness itself is remote, you can find amenities in nearby towns. Munising, to the north, offers various restaurants, and Chatham, to the west, has cafes. These towns are good options for a meal or snack before or after your family hike.
The shortest family-friendly option is a segment of the Au Train Falls Trail, which is just over half a kilometer long. It's a quick and easy walk, perfect for very young children or a brief outing.
The Rock River Canyon Wilderness and surrounding Hiawatha National Forest are home to a variety of wildlife. On family-friendly trails, you might spot whitetail deer, squirrels, hares, and numerous bird species, including woodpeckers and songbirds. While black bears are present in the wider wilderness, sightings on popular, easier trails are less common.
