July 10, 2024, Paisley Woods Bicycle Trail - North loop

Paisley Woods Bicycle Trail is not only open to bikers but also to hikers and runners. This 22-mile trail can be taken in full or in segments, as there are two loops: a northern loop and a southern loop. The trail is in Florida scrub and sandhill environments, with stretches of sand that can slow walking down a bit, so factor in a little extra time and effort. The yellow diamond blazes mark the trail.

The Florida Trail stretches 1,500 miles and is one of the eleven National Scenic Trails in the United States. Hikers who hike this trail in full cross swamps, prairies, forests, and coastal dunes. The best time to hike the Florida Trail is during the cooler and drier months, like between November and April.

Privi and water pump close together, a great opportunity for a cozy meal. But you have to set up the tent elsewhere, camping overnight is unfortunately not allowed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many family-friendly hiking trails are available in Billies Bay Wilderness?

Billies Bay Wilderness is known for its rugged, untamed nature, and as such, traditional family-friendly hiking trails are limited. Our guide features 5 routes, but it's important to note that none are rated as 'easy'. Most are moderate to difficult, reflecting the wilderness character of the area. For families seeking easier options, we recommend exploring nearby areas within the Ocala National Forest.

Are there any easy trails suitable for toddlers or young children in Billies Bay Wilderness?

Given the challenging terrain and the lack of established, easy trails, Billies Bay Wilderness is generally not recommended for toddlers or very young children. The area is predominantly a hardwood swamp with dense underbrush, making even short walks difficult. For a more suitable experience with young children, consider exploring other parts of the Ocala National Forest that offer paved or well-maintained paths.

What is the best time of year to visit Billies Bay Wilderness for a family hike?

The cooler, drier months from late fall to early spring (roughly November to April) are generally the most pleasant for exploring the edges of Billies Bay Wilderness. During these times, temperatures are more moderate, and insect activity tends to be lower. Summer months can be very hot, humid, and bring a higher chance of rain and mosquitoes, making conditions more challenging for families.

Are dogs allowed on the trails in Billies Bay Wilderness?

Yes, dogs are generally permitted in Billies Bay Wilderness and on trails like the Florida National Scenic Trail, which skirts the area. However, due to the presence of wildlife such as alligators and black bears, and the often wet and rugged terrain, it is crucial to keep dogs on a leash and under strict control. Always ensure your pet is prepared for the conditions and that you carry enough water for them.

What kind of wildlife can we expect to see during a hike?

Billies Bay Wilderness is a haven for diverse wildlife. While direct observation deep within the swamp is challenging, you might spot alligators in waterways, various bird species including turkeys and eagles, and lizards. Black bears are also present in the wider Ocala National Forest area. Keep a respectful distance and never feed wild animals.

Are there any circular routes suitable for families?

Yes, there are a couple of circular routes that families with older children and some hiking experience might consider. The Paisley Woods Bicycle Trail loop from Alexander Springs Day Use Area is a moderate 11.8 km loop. Another option is the Buck Lake Loop, which is also moderate and around 10.5 km. Be aware that these are longer routes and require a good level of fitness.

What should we pack for hiking with kids in Billies Bay Wilderness?

Given the wilderness nature of the area, it's essential to be well-prepared. Pack plenty of water, snacks, insect repellent, sunscreen, and a first-aid kit. Wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes suitable for potentially wet and uneven terrain. Long pants and sleeves are advisable to protect against insects and dense vegetation. A map and compass or a GPS device are also recommended, as trails can be less defined.

Are there any facilities like restrooms or picnic areas along the trails?

Billies Bay Wilderness is a primitive area with very limited facilities. You will not find restrooms or picnic areas directly along the trails within the wilderness itself. It's best to plan for these needs before entering the wilderness. Nearby recreation areas like Alexander Springs Recreation Area, which is close to some trailheads, may offer more amenities.

What do other hikers enjoy most about exploring Billies Bay Wilderness?

The area is highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 5.0 stars. Reviewers often praise the sense of true wilderness, the abundant wildlife, and the unique, pristine swamp ecosystem. It's appreciated by those seeking a rugged, untouched natural experience away from crowds.

Are there any permits required for hiking in Billies Bay Wilderness?

Generally, no specific permits are required for day hiking within Billies Bay Wilderness. However, if you plan to camp or engage in other specific activities, it's always best to check the latest regulations with the Ocala National Forest service. Standard entrance fees may apply to certain access points or recreation areas like Alexander Springs Day Use Area.

Where can we find parking for the trailheads?

Parking is typically available at designated access points to the Ocala National Forest, which border Billies Bay Wilderness. For routes like the Paisley Woods Bicycle Trail loop, parking can often be found near Alexander Springs Day Use Area. Always check specific route details on komoot for the most accurate parking information, as options can be limited and may require a fee.

Are there any wheelchair-accessible trails in Billies Bay Wilderness?

Due to its rugged and untrailed nature, Billies Bay Wilderness does not offer wheelchair-accessible trails. The terrain consists of dense swamp, uneven ground, and thick vegetation, making it unsuitable for wheelchairs. For accessible outdoor experiences, we recommend exploring other parts of the Ocala National Forest that have paved or boardwalk trails designed for accessibility.
