This area is an important part of Providence's early history, a reminder of the water that once covered the Great Salt Cove area. Over time, the water was drained, land was reclaimed, and starting in 1898, railroad tracks ran through the area to serve the city's numerous industrial plants. With the passage of time and the decline of the economy, the downtown area fell into disrepair. However, the river diversion project of the 1980s and 1990s revitalized Providence's downtown area, redesigning the former waterway. One of the most magnificent state houses in the United States, for the country's smallest state. Designed by the renowned architectural firm of McKim, Mead & White, known for the Boston Public Library (1895) and the renovation of the White House (1902), the majestic, white Georgia marble-clad domed building (1895–1904) was erected at the height of Rhode Island's industrial boom.
