If you can't get a parking reservation, hitchhiking is a good option. Going up and down worked perfectly!

Sturdy footwear with good tread and plenty of water are essential for this tour. The dry conditions will make you thirsty, and the ground is quite sandy in places, so you'd be slipping without good tread. A truly beautiful tour, 5 stars plus, an absolute highlight, and manageable for most people.

A beautiful section of the tour

In October 2025, we encountered the rather aggressive German Shepherds from the blue house next to the very pretty, colorful door on the path. Fortunately, after a few minutes of growling and barking, they retreated onto the property, allowing us to pass. Avoiding them is otherwise impossible at that point. So, if the dogs had stayed on the path, we would have either had to stay within one meter of two territorial guard dogs or face a long, steep climb back down.

What kind of natural landscapes can we expect to see on family hikes?

Isla De La Palma, known as 'La Isla Bonita,' boasts incredibly diverse landscapes. You can explore lush laurel forests, like those found on the Cubo de la Galga circular route, which feel like a fairy tale. Other trails lead through dramatic volcanic terrain, pine forests, and deep ravines, offering stunning views and a chance to experience the island's unique geology.

What are some interesting natural attractions to look out for on our hikes?

The island is rich in natural wonders. You might encounter the impressive Cubo de la Galga Gorge or the dramatic Las Angustias Gorge. Don't miss the chance to see the vibrant Colorful Waterfall, a truly unique sight. For panoramic views, consider trails near Roque de los Muchachos, the island's highest point.

What is the best time of year for family hiking on Isla De La Palma?

Isla De La Palma enjoys a mild climate year-round, with average temperatures between 18 and 27 degrees Celsius, making it an ideal hiking destination throughout the year. The 'sea of clouds' phenomenon, often seen from higher elevations, adds a magical touch, especially during certain times of the year when trade winds bring humidity.

Are there any easy trails suitable for toddlers or very young children?

For families with toddlers, look for shorter, flatter sections of trails. While specific 'toddler-only' routes are less common, many easy trails offer manageable distances. The La Cumbrecita to Lomo de las Chozas Trail, for instance, is relatively short at just over 3 km and has minimal elevation gain, making it a good option for younger hikers or those in carriers.

Can we bring our dog on the hiking trails?

While many trails on Isla De La Palma are accessible, regulations regarding dogs can vary, especially within protected areas like the Caldera de Taburiente National Park. It's always best to check specific trail rules or local signage before heading out with your furry friend to ensure a pleasant and compliant experience for everyone.

Absolutely. The island's volcanic origins are a major draw. While the full Ruta de los Volcanes is challenging, you can find family-friendly sections or viewpoints that offer glimpses of the volcanic landscape. The Pico Birigoyo and Montaña la Barquita circular route, for example, takes you past volcanic cones and offers impressive vistas of the island's unique terrain, including the San Antonio Volcano.

What should we wear for family hiking on Isla De La Palma?

Given the varied microclimates, it's wise to dress in layers. Even on family-friendly trails, conditions can change. Comfortable walking shoes are essential, and bringing water, sun protection (hat, sunscreen), and a light rain jacket is always recommended, especially if you plan to explore higher elevations or areas prone to mist.
