The Lancaster had departed from Bourn airfield in England at 23:04 on 12 June 1943. On the way back from a bombing raid on the German city of Bochum, the aircraft was shot down at 02:20 by a Messerschmitt Bf110 flown by Oberleutnant Werner Husemann. The Lancaster crashed on the land of P. Visser on the Slikkerdijk. Four of the seven crew members managed to leave the aircraft with their parachutes and land safely. Shortly afterwards, Thomas, Hanrahan, Robertson and Bloomfield were arrested and, after interrogation, taken to a prisoner of war camp. Doyle and Beard are still considered missing. Bromley's body was found more than two weeks later in a cornfield, not far from the crash site. He was buried in the cemetery of Wieringerwaard.

Be careful, there are quite a few shells and broken shells here, which makes it easier to get a puncture on this part of the road with a racing bike
